SK Innovation plans to develop an electric vehicle battery that can run up to 500 kilometers with a single charge by the year 2020. The electric car using the new battery could drive the distance from Seoul to Busan in a single charge.
SK Innovation officials said on April 9, "To get ourselves better prepared before China, the world's largest electric car market, abolishes its electric car subsidies by 2020, we decided to place more focus on upgrading our battery technology further."
Industry watchers said that the electric vehicles could become more popularized if their single-charge driving distance is expanded up to 500 kilometers.
At present, most gasoline-type vehicles can drive up to 500-600 kilometers with a single fuel supply. Although Korea's battery makers, including SK Innovation, already have world-class technologies, their batteries are limited up to 350 kilometers in a single charge distance. firstname.lastname@example.org
