Samsung Electronics slightly reduced its R&D spending last year, in contrast to a slight increase in LG Electronics' investment in research and development.

After reducing its R&D spending in 2015 first in 16 years, Samsung slashed the spending again last year. Meanwhile, LG Electronics showed a steady increase in R&D spending, although the overall amount of its R&D expenditure is far lower than that of Samsung.

Samsung Electronics' R&D investment amounted to 14.79 trillion won last year, a volume equivalent to 7.3 percent of its sales. The share of R&D spending in overall sales stood at 7.4 percent each in 2014 and 2015 when the company chalked up sales of 15.32 trillion won and 14.84 trillion won.

Samsung's annual R&D spending passed the 10-trillion-won level first in 2011 and reached 15.3 trillion won level in 2014. LG Electronics spent 3.87 trillion won for R&D last year, up 70 billion won from 3.80 trillion won a year ago.
