The number of patent applications filed in Europe by Korean companies reached an all-time high last year, with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics each ranking No. 3 and No. 4 among patent applicants. According to the 2016 annual report released on March 7 by the European Patent Office (EPO), Korea ranked as the eighth-largest country in terms of patent applications in Europe last year.
Korean companies filed applications for 6,825 patents in Europe last year, up 6.5 percent from a year ago. The growth was the highest in Korea's history, exceeding 4.0 percent in 2015.
By individual company, Philips of the Netherlands ranked No. 1 with 2,568 cases, followed by China's telecommunications equipment maker Huawei with 2,390.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics each ranked No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, with 2,316 and 2,313.
Samsung Electronics suffered a negative growth of 2.1 percent, while LG Electronics registered a positive growth of 10.6 percent.
