Korea's Industrial Output Remains Unchanged in April

Korea's industrial output growth remained unchanged in April from a year earlier but it slightly improved from the previous month when the figured recorded a decrease of -1.2%, Statistics Korea said on May 31.

Production in the mining and manufacturing industries edged up 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively, over the previous month, while service sector output grew 1 percent on-year and 0.2% over the previous month.

Indices for domestic consumption improved slightly. Retail sales in April edged up by 1.0% over the previous month thank largely to growth of durable goods such as automobiles.

Equipment investment in April increased by 4.5 percent from the previous month and by 5.0 percent from the same period of the previous year, but it failed to recover the level of January when the growth rate stood at 7.8%.

Domestic machinery shipment decreased by 3.1 percent from the same period of the previous year. In April, the value of completed construction at constant prices decreased by 5.2 percent from the previous month and 7.5 percent from the same period of the previous year, while construction orders received decreased by 4.4 percent from the same period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, average operating rate of manufacturers was 79.3%, up 1.2 percentage points from March.
